I was stationed in Turkey that year and took leave to come to England. I am from the United States.
Knebworth '86 was the best concert I have ever seen. I had a girlfriend from Kent who had surprised me with tickets for a Birthday present. We caught the train out of London. The ride was fun and the countryside was beautiful.
When we arrived we had a long walk to the entry gates. There was a man with a truckload full of beer selling it by the can. We stopped and had a few before entering figuring his beer would be cheaper than what was inside.
Once inside we found a great spot to put down our blanket right by the main sound and light tower in the middle of the grounds. I chose that location thinking the sound would be best nearest the soundman and it was.
The blanket thing was really different from what happens in the US. She told me that the blanket would mark our spot and nobody would mess with it. WOW! ...that would never work back home. LoL. The opener (Belois Som'e') not sure how to spell that. ...anyway we nearly had to hit the dirt to get away from the rotten fruit and veggies and giant plastic bottles that the people were pelting the band with. What a riot that was!
Big Country sounded great...loved the bagpipes in a rock band!
Seeing Queen arrive in several brightly colored helicopters was so cool. You could feel the electricity in the crowd when Freddie Mercury waved at the crowds from his helo.
Queen was simply amazing. Freddie had total control of his enormous audience! ...never saw anything like it then or since then!
The wierdest thing I saw at the event was in the men's urinal area. I went to take a piss and inside the means latrine area there was this crowd of very drunk guys urinating on a rather large female in her underwear. Other drunk guys were yelling out for her to put her clothes back on but she was obviously enjoying her "shower ". It was funny but pretty nasty.
After the concert we walked past the guy with the beer truck. He had been drinking too much of his product and was now passed out flat on his back on the bed of the truck while passers by were now helping themselves to cases of beer! The once beautiful countryside was now totaly littered with trash.....all the way back to London! The train was pretty nasty now too.
Best concert...best experience ever. Wish I could turn back time to do it all over again! There will never be another night like that one ....ever.

Thanks for the story airbrush phil. I think that Magical is the best word to define this concert.

Call me crazy, and don't hate me, but to me that photo looks like Big Country not Status Quo.
Stuart was wearing vests like that, played a guitar like that and the other guy looks like Bruce Watson.
Even the drum kit looks like what they had, basing off other 1986 youtube videos.
Also, if Status Quo were on just before Queen, why would there be another drum set set-up unless it was Roger's?

Awww. I didn't catch the post that said the image has been changed. Anyway, I can pretty much confirm that the picture now on page 1 is Big Country.

Indeed it is.
The link in this thread is a direct link to my website. The post is a few years old, and since then that link has been replaced with a picture of Big Country.

Oh yes the infamous organ pipes. These should of been incorporated into the show for 'Who Wants To Live Forever' at most of the outside shows, but could not be wheeled out from behind the curtain and under the walkways as there was not enough room. The stage was huge at Knebworth so this is where it was premiered. A similar version was later used in the 'Forever' video but not the same one. It would of made more sense to have this on the stage already at the side of the stage on Brian's side, so this problem would not of arisen.
If anybody has any proof that they used the 'pipes' on stage apart from Knebworth do let me know.

Very late reply, but I hadn't heard of this at all. Sounds pretty cool and dramatic really, too bad there's no video.
EDIT: Went through this entire thread, all the anecdotes and stories are really interesting. Since I never got to see them live, it's nice to have people who have seen them who can paint a collective picture of the experience, beyond what's been captured on camera. Great thread :)

Indeed great thread. There has to be many others out there who could share their story of that day, hopefully they will.

So, the 29th anniversary is coming closer ... Would be anyone here interested in a merge of the best available sources for Status Quo, Big Country and Queen?
