The eYe instrumental shows that the track did have potential:

I've always been pretty indifferent to it but I think a lot of the dislike for it has to do with it opening the album. The band always seemed to have a really great opening track...and this was filler at best. I think if this was towards the end of the album tucked in amongst My Baby Does Me or whatever you'd see less dislike....
Personally I think it's alright...just nothing I ever seek to play...

I love the song. One of my faves. And Khashoggis ship is a belter too.

It doesn't have a "grab you by the throat" quality that an opener should have. That's why I wasn't so keen on it.

Also, I think Greg Brook said that it was recorded while Roger was off on holiday (hence the programmed drums).

Just an opinion but.
I think it's understated drumming makes it interesting and completely separates it from the album as a whole. Treated as such it's just a fun INTRODUCTION to an album. FUN.
It never kicks fully until KHASHOGGI..
Just like WWRY, it is very sparse.
My only problem with it is Brian's first bends after "we've got all night" (bends) we've got all day (follow up bends)
Their mastering doesn't account for a big enough bite for traditional QUEEN stuff.

I love Party but I hate Kashoggi's Ship only because of one thing. The "No one stops my party" part have an awful off-key demo-ish feel that I don't wanna hear on a Queen song. The little bridge is funny but quite Freddie by numbers.

I love 'Party'.
I do remember at the time of 'The Miracle' being released that I was somewhat taken aback by it on first listen though - I'd read the hype and publicity about the album, and that it more 'organic' and had more of a classic Queen rock sound and feel etc... and then I put the CD on and was greeted to drum machines everywhere in something that, initially, sounded a hell of a lot like 'Let's Turn It On' (from Mr Bad Guy)!!
However, once I had listened a few times I realised that it was a great 'set up' for the album, melding lyrically with the following 'Khashoggi's Ship'. The song is 'fun', the middle section is actually pretty 'heavy' (though not in a 'Metallica' type way) and intense, with loads of frenetic guitars. Also, whilst most of the drums are programmed, there are some real ones in there too on a couple of sections!!

You could post 90% of the Queen catalogue and get varying opinions and critics like this, that's why its unfair to single out Party as having a modicum of hatred.

The thing is that I kind of like "silly" and I think a lot of great Queen songs have a bit of "silliness". I always thought that a sense of humour was key to appreciating Queen.

Who the hell else could have got away with the doom, power and profound -ness of White Man then merrily slide into Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy ?
Only Queen.

No, Greg didn't say that, it was Roger (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TurL-MOsH18&list=PLD7A5C99029BD4815).

I've always loved Party (and Khashoggi's Ship, I've always considered that both songs are a single number) and I consider it as a highlight for The Miracle album.

I agree! I love the way these two songs work together and the way Party segues into Khashoggi's Ship. A rip-snorting start to the album IMO!
