Why all the hate for Party?

I think because the first single was I Want it All everyone was excited because it would appear Queen were getting back to being a rock band. Then Party kicks in with programmed drums that sound worse than the ones on the Works 5 years earlier (and the horrid synthesised tambourine) and it knocks the wind out of your sails a bit. Though I have fond memories of the album as it was the first one I bought on release day I think it has aged worse than any other in the catalogue, with the possible exception of Hot Space.

I always felt I want it all should have kicked off the album, I don't dislike party, but it sounded more like a b side to me, I always skip my baby does me & rain must fall .

I feel like the album version of I Want It All wouldn't have been a fitting opening track. The rocks mix would've worked perfectly, though.
The Invisible Man would've worked pretty well, IMHO.

On my iTunes, I've kicked out the chaff (as far as I'm concerned – this isn't the Gospel According to Lester Burnham) and have it as such:

1. Breakthru
2. I Want It All
3. The Invisible Man
4. Too Much Love Will Kill You
5. The Miracle
6. Scandal
7. Hang On In There
8. Hijack My Heart
9. My Life Has Been Saved
10. Was It All Worth It

I love Breakthru as the opener – it's a fast rock song, but has that nice, moody intro. On another version from many years back, I used Lord Fickle's version of Breakthru, which spliced the extended remix intro with the "I wake up" bit, and it worked really well.

i think its a hell of a lot better than invisible man. that has to be one of their worst songs. not a fan of breakthru either. everything else on the miracle is fine. they should have cut breakthru and invisible man and added hang on.

"Party" is a badly constructed song and i soon lose interest in this song after 10 seconds.
It starts off with that awful drumming and the tune is awful.
To think Queen discarded some really great tracks for this crap.

Who the hell else could have got away with the doom, power and profound -ness of White Man then merrily slide into Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy ?
Only Queen.[/QUOTE]

Death On Two Legs into Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon.........who the hell else would have THAT as their opening two tracks on an album? :D
I'll take you to the Seven Seas of Rhye

Party isnt horrible, I think.........like some others here, I think there's other songs that would have been better suited as the opening song........IWIA maybe.......or even The Miracle.........

I've never been a huge fan of The Miracle as an album and I'm pretty sure that opening with Party is likely the reason. That and Khassoggis ship just left me cold.
But over the weekend I actually listened to The Miracle for the first time in (probably 5 years) ages and remembered how much I like the rest of the tracks on the album.

So APART from the first two tracks I'm revising my opinion on The Miracle, but I'm definitely in the Party hating side.
I would agree with the original poster that over the years Party has got a pretty bad rap on here overall and I can see why.

Probably Delilah is the most hated Queen song, but there are other posts about that piece of cat poo.

Difficult to imagine now as they are truly iconic songs, but 'We Will Rock You' into 'We Are The Champions' is a potentially risky album opener too on NOTW; a track with just handclaps and footstomps and a 'rapping' vocal over it and no real harmonies to speak of, and then what appears to be a subdued piano ballad (before the chorus comes in).

Yeah, quite. All these points set Queen apart.

Just to make it clear.... had they been ABLE to Tour the MIRACLE, PARTY would have been the ideal opener.

All the talk about "why don't you come back and play" and suggestions that people are counting the band out make for a really deliberate opener.

Just imagine Brian laying in guitar live after a bit of the song's "cheery" playback. Right after the first chorus "Go get em boy!"

Riff leads into the big G chord opening which could transition into any number of rockers. Of course they'd NEVER play the full track. Just open with it like machines (or back to humans)

With it's simplistic weak drumming underscored with brightness I think it'd have been a good show opener.

Of course. It didn't happen

Yes. I agree Matt. Always loved this! Synthetic drums and all! And then Khashoggi's ship to follow. Would have blown us all away IMO. What a shame it couldn't happen!
