It's a mistake to think that punk dominated the UK charts in the late 1970s. The Sex Pistols had come and gone by 1978. FBG/BR was higher in the charts than The Jam's Down in the Tube Station at Midnight (although neither Queen song could top the lyric "They smelt of pubs, and wormwood scrubs, and too many right wing meetings") and also sold more than the Undertones' Teenage Kicks. In 1979 CLTCL was higher in the charts than Eton Rifles by the Jam. In any event, in 1978 the UK charts were dominated by songs from the movie Grease.
I believe that in the USA If You Can't Beat Them would've been a good bet for a hit single, given its bigger rock market.

"if you cant beat them....join them"
This must be one of the most unethical, wrong message someone could give...
probably they tried to repair this mess by coming on the next album with a positive, helping message "don't try suicide", unfortunately this message came along with a melody fit for retarded children.

Yes, John Deacon was history's worst monster.
And I would say your comment "with a melody fit for retarded children" is much worse than the song.

Jazz is great. There was plenty of filler on earlier albums IMO. Perhaps not as much as Jazz, but it was probably a couple of songs too long anyway. Perhaps one of the reasons I like it.
I could understand why it MIGHT have got an anniversary with DSMN and FBG - but perhaps their inclusion in BR was considered enough to reactivate interest in Jazz.
I guess any reissue would be lost alongside the film. Queen like to focus on one thing at a time. Role on LK 40.

Jazz is great album, I think it needs a remix. The eye game had great instrumental of more of that jazz.
It sold better than the first 3 albums and ADATR, itwent Platinum both UK and US.

^ What do you like in 'More Of That Jazz' eYe instrumental. 40 seconds repeated 5 or 6 times in a row ?

It is more interesting with better sound since it is a remix. The Eye provide many instrumental remixes on songs like more of that jazz, morden times rock n roll, IGSM, and party to name few, all of which have better drum sound. The Jazz suffers on drum sound and in general is little mud. If it was the other way it could have been great. I wish it had the game sound treatment. In terms of music is very experimental with clever ideas and many beautiful songs.

The Eye mixes are a bit echoy for my tastes (I guess due to when they were done and by whom) but I see what you mean - I think they're just nice to hear without singing.
No problems with the Jazz sound for me

I think some people on here are a little to bitter as the Jazz album is concerned, who does not love "Dead on Time" "In only seven days" "Let me entertain you" "Jealousy" it is beautiful album and well crafted in switzerland. I think in terms of bad albums my ultimate would be "Made in Heaven" that album just has a bad serious feel to it.

I agree with MIH - it was born out of good intention, but for me is about as related to 'My' Queen as Cosmos Rocks.
That said, of the Jazz songs you listed, only LMEY is on my 'keep' list. DOT is a maybe.

JAZZ was/is OK album, better than everything by Queen after The Game ... Definitely !!!

This is bad remix during 90s but the interesting thing is the different vocal take.

Jazz is a great album, but it's horribly mixed

Everyone has his own opinion on this album. Some like it, some don't.
Nonetheless, as some people said, Jazz was a relative flop at the time, it did not sell that much, no single really stood out at the time, even Don't Stop Me Now which is massive nowadays. And it does not seem it is a very loved album in Queen members. Roger has publicly despised this album and I think (but not sure) Brian too. When you see that even a very popular album like ADATR did not have its 40th anniversary treatment, it is no surprise Jazz is overlooked this year.

I still think A Day At The Races is the ultimate Queen album in regards to their musical prowess. Can't believe they didn't do a 40th Anniversary issue.:(
