A Day at the Races track "You & I" should have been a single?

Farookh Bulsarsa of Mercury fought in the Old War. It was he who during Ogre Battle, fought, and ultimately defeated an enormous Sentient at the ancient battlefield in the shadow of the Orokin Tower of the Unum.

You & I is the best single Queen never released.
Spot on the money Mooghead. This track deserved more recognition.

Somebody To Love sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody and they are both written by Freddie
You And I sounds like You're My Best Friend and they are both written by John

I'm not a massive fan of You And I. It's right on the corny end of John's songwriting - but looking at the album there's not really much of a choice once the you remove the big guns.
Perhaps GOFLB should've been the next single, and it's place on the EP later taken by something else.
Although I can see their reasoning with TYMD being a single, again, I'm not a big fan of it.

What if... Every song on the Queen catalogue was released as a single?
There wouldn't be topics like this.

When Queen released there fifth album " A Day at the Races" back in 1976 the first single to be cut was "Somebody to Love" which reached number 2 here in the UK then disaster happened for there second single they released "Tie your Mother Down" and although it is a great rock song it was not really "single" material for the general public at the time and only reached no 30 i think. That is where i suggest "You & I " should have been released instead of " Tie your Mother Down" it is very easy on the ears and makes for a great top five single and it is so underrated with Queen fans but in my opinion it is Queen gold. Easily recognisable as Queen with great vocals and guitar riffs, i am sure it would have become a smash back in 1976.
What do you ardent fans think of that then?
You and I is a great album track, but does it stand alone as a strong single song? Remember it had to hook people who hadn't already bought the album.
Tie Your Mother Down as a single didn't work. At a time of top ten Quo songs on the UK chart it was probably expected to equal what Staus Quo could do. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy maybe could have made a better second single.

Vocal Harmony @ "Good Old Fashioned Lover boy" was released as a single in 1977 for "Queen's First E.P" a wonderfully playful song very much in the vein of "You and I" but with a commercial chorus and staggeringly good vocal harmonies, The guitar solo has sophisticated arrangements with harmonised melodies across the stereo image. Highest chart position in the UK was no 21.
"You and I" would have made a brilliant single at the time and more attractive to the general public than "Tie Your Mother Down"
John Deacon in my opinion was the second best writer in Queen.

Yeah I'm weary of alternate histories. We'd probably be having a thread about why was You and I was a single and not TYMD.
TYMD works well as a minor hit and live fav.
Some of Bowie's best know tracks were never even singles, or certainly under performed as singles.

"Tie your mother down" was not a minor hit it was a flop in the Uk.
Quiet a disaster for Queen after the glory of Bo Rhap & Somebody to Love. Even John Deacon's "Your my best friend" made the top ten. Mays "Tie your mother down" only made no 30.
"You and i" was Queen gold and forgotten about even when the band toured it got ignored.

Right but by the time TYMD was released many people had already bought the album.
Do we know if the single version of TYMD had the intro? While great that might've bemused the casual record buyer.

It charted in the top 40. That isn't a flop. Compared to their chart run it was a disappointment sure, but flop? Nah.

passing time clearly settled this debate "Tie your mother down" > "You and I"
