Eh...I like it well enough but The Works was the beginning of Freddie seeming to lose his touch as a "hit-maker". He seemed spent as a creative force and also this was the first album where his voice sounded markedly deteriorated. Low...rough...lacking the clarity of the past. It's the same with It's a Hard Life which many compare to Play the Game. I much prefer Play the Game just for Freddie's more youthful voice and delivery alone...plus it sounds more lushly produced and yet it is 4 years older which reminds me of something else...
The production values on MOTP, Tear It Up, It's a Hard Life aren't exactly "radio-ready"...almost sound like demos it's markedly plain after the lush, almost perfect production of the Album opener Radio Ga Ga.

The Works is the Queen album with the most hit singles ever - Gaga, Break Free, Hard Life, Hammer to Fall. It was a safe album but it sounds great. Get some decent stereo and dont listen to lousy streams.

MOTP is OK, but not to release as a single.
KPTOW has more hitpotential to me, even though I think that is the weakest song on the album. but this song sounds more like what people like to hear.[/QUOTE]
KPTOW is an underrated gem on TW

One of the best songs on the album.

After 1984 single A Hard Life, Freddie seemed to be very subdued with his songwriting and he never continued been main songwriter on singles, but Roger seemed to take centre stage or Brian.
i love T.G.I.C single and in my opinion it should have been number one in the singes chart!
Classic Queen but i wish it had some blistering guitar work from Brian.

TGIC seems a bit rushed. YUp there is some truth in it that Freddie took a backseat on hitsingles. Friends will be friends was a carbon copy of champions and not a big hit. He was back on Miracle and Innuendo but you can only guess who came up with what.
On the other hand he wrote more Deeper Cuts like Princes Of The Universe - best song on AKOM by far

Next to Innuendo, play the game is my favourite song by the boys.

Oh I LOVE Play the Game. It's one of their most underrated songs and one of my favorite Freddie vocals.

I have to jump in here and agree, I absolutely love Play The Game. The harmonies just flow together like honey and sound so warm. Freddie’s voice is beautiful on it too. From Hot Space on I feel like Freddie lost some of the purity of his voice, and there are fewer songs that I enjoy just for the sound of his voice.

Agreed.
I still think his voice sounded great on Hot Space but maybe a little bit of his newly-aquired cigarette habit was starting to show.
The Works was were there was a stunning drop in quality, imo.

I really like The Works for some reason even though it doesn't have many songs I love compared to the AKOM album. I think TW is my favourite 80s Queen album if someone could tell me how that would be useful.
Am I the only person on here who doesn't like Princes Of The Universe? I've never really liked the song and it's one of a few Queen songs that I've never grown go like.
