I’m not as huge a fan of the 80s albums, for me they are good but not what I listen to regularly. Although of all of them I listen to Innuendo the most. I don’t consider The Game part of the 80s really, they are still in good form on that one. I agree that as of The Works Freddie’s voice just didn’t have the versatility and range it once did...and the songs get more simple (generalizing here, there are still some individual gems but not really the Freddie compositions).
I like Princes of the Universe, I don’t listen to it much because it is on AKOM and that is one of my least favorite albums.

I had a pirate cassette with the The Works album, and given the small print, I thought “L” is “!” and thought for a long time that the song is called Man On the Prow.Funny, isn't it?
I could have written this post myself. I agree with all of it...including The Game really being the last of their "70's period" albums.

I have to jump in here and agree, I absolutely love Play The Game. The harmonies just flow together like honey and sound so warm. Freddie’s voice is beautiful on it too. From Hot Space on I feel like Freddie lost some of the purity of his voice, and there are fewer songs that I enjoy just for the sound of his voice.
That it because he started smoking. That's why he got a raspier voice. On Innuendo he got back to normal almost as he quit smoking

Am I the only person on here who doesn't like Princes Of The Universe? I've never really liked the song and it's one of a few Queen songs that I've never grown go like.
After 1984 single A Hard Life, Freddie seemed to be very subdued with his songwriting and he never continued been main songwriter on singles, but Roger seemed to take centre stage or Brian.
i love T.G.I.C single and in my opinion it should have been number one in the singes chart!
Classic Queen but i wish it had some blistering guitar work from Brian.

After The Works and Mr. Bad Guy, Freddie had Jim... he never wrote a song about a real relationship gone bad of his again.

TGIC seems a bit rushed. YUp there is some truth in it that Freddie took a backseat on hitsingles. Friends will be friends was a carbon copy of champions and not a big hit. He was back on Miracle and Innuendo but you can only guess who came up with what.
On the other hand he wrote more Deeper Cuts like Princes Of The Universe - best song on AKOM by far
Friends Will Be Friends was anthemic, but I disagree it was a carbon copy by far. Many different emotions as well.

It was a pretty much calculated song written by numbers. Just like MOTP was a CLTCL rewrite

After Who Wants To Live Forever and A Kind Of Magic (great stand alone single track) and One Vision, Princes Of The Universe is the best thing on that album and does give a nod to Queen's 70's style. I like it but I'm aware how weak most of tracks on that album really are.

I have to be in a receptive mood for that song. A lot of the time I find it a little too "rock by paint by numbers"
The only thing that surprised me when I bought the album (June 86) was being confused seeing Freddie named as writer. It really wasn't consistent with the stuff he was writing at that time.
...and - for all intents and purposes is sounds 100% like a Brian composition.

The only track I skip on the AKOM album is One Vision. When they first released it as a single for the Iron Eagle soundtrack I was all "Yay! Rah!" about it but it wears thin VERY quickly. It's probably the Queen track with the quickest expiration date for me. I think it's a much inferior copy of Hammer to Fall(which I still love to this day).

I agree on all counts. I actually didn't care for it much when it was first released and really dug Gimme the Prize much more. I have warmed to it more over the years but would still place it in the bottom half of all Queen tracks....maybe even bottom 25%.

The AKOM has several songs that I love more than The Works (they are AKOM, One Year Of Love, Who Wants To Live Forever and Don't Lose Your Head). However, One Vision, Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, Gimme The Prize and Princes Of The Universe are songs that I don't like as much or rarely listen to in comparison to other songs on the album. If I liked just a couple more songs on the album I'd rank the album a lot more.
