They were looking at the most 'original or distinctive voice' rather than the most tunefull, although the worbling puffed up Mariah Canary, Ms Houston and Ms Dion are about the only ones on the list that can 'sing' in tune, sorry Fred but sometimes it was a bit ruff.
There are many more singers that have better voices, just not so well known, Steve Perry of Journey, Nancy Wilson from Heart, two of my favs, tune, power original but to the average joe public Who the F???? are they.

What I find most worrying is Eminem is in the list and according to the list he has a better voice than David Bowie. I don't think this list should be taken too seriously.
This is America remember? We're stupid little pieces of shit, haha. But we all know Freddie has the best voice ever so that's all you need to know.
That list was crap, but we can`t expect Freddie to be nr. 1 when we live in 2006. The music industry is all about money, money and ofcourse the most important thing...MONEY!
MTV's lists are about as valuable as the weekly "Favorite songs you'd want to hear live" thread that appears here.
Mariah sells a lot of records right now... but might want to start mixing in a salad every now and then.

You having a laugh Sir Freddie is way better than that loud mouth bitch but she is pretty though.
Why kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

I don't really see the fascination over Mariah Carey. You have to admit she is a good singer but those high notes do get annoying and she could never sing a Quen song like Freddie.
Hah...Eminem is always on these lists, so that was the first person I looked for to dismiss this list as a joke. Sure enough, there he is.
They don't even have Bryan Ferry from Roxy Music, so that kinda proves it's a list made of current celebs.
When Mariah sings high it sounds like a joke...I thought she was on drugs the first time she did it, like an Anna Nicole moment, then everyone said how *good* it was?!?
And she got booed at Live-Aid...I don't recall that happening to Freddie :)

Sorry, MTV, but this is ridiculous. Most of the listed are well-known artists who have new material in the charts. And some are kind of "legends" who are featured in each and every poll. What about those who are not active anymore, who proved 15 or 20 years ago, that they were great singers? Where are the non English speaking? Where, for god's sake, is Aretha Franklin??
And Eminem didn't even prove that he can sing yet ...[/QUOTE]they took my edit out

wee i don't know what the fuck to say... there should be 1.freddie mercury 2.morten harket(a-ha) 3.george michael and sure Seal too
Emimem isn't a singer! What the fuck??!
Since when did a rapper have a better singing voice than the likes of Ian Gillan (from Deep Purple) and Roy Orbison? This list deserves to be shoved somewhere...
It looks like they are going by who has the most range, since Mariah Carey I think holds a record for that and Freddie also had a great range.
