The differences between both C5s is down to vocal modes.
On Let Me In Your Heart Again, he's singing it with more of a curbing technique and on In My Defense - he's using something called distortion.

Hi Greg, I'm a pianist not a singer, but am I right in thinking that 'curbing' is what is commonly known as 'mix' between falsetto and chest voice, and overdrive/distortion is the full chest voice at the top of the range?

We know the song has been recorded for The Works, but what we hear on the record has been worked on in 2014.
What parts are original? Has John rerecorded his parts? How much is left untouched?
I gotta say that this track is the absolute highlight of all Queen releases in the last 20 years, I cant understand how they overlooked this for Made In Heaven? It is just so beautiful, Freddie sings so so so beautiful. The overall musician ship is excellent as well and makes me so proud to be a Queen fan. I love this band so much.
The song is truly well played, listen to this: http://youtu.be/s-t_l_M6IPc. Despite a cover, you hear how well-written this song is.
The A-D cliche is in fact G-C and transponds later in the song to A-D. But the rest of the chord progression is very original. Freddie lifts this song, what a difference with Anita Dobson. You believe the man when he wants to be in her/his heart again.
I am just curious how much of the release is from 1983 and what from 2014?

99.99% unlikely. If he'd been in to re-record his parts, he would have also played bass on "Love Kills" (which never happened)

I feel like the backing vocals might be 2014 - the 'Your heart again' phrases in the verses just sound like Brian today. Freddie also doesn't sing backing vocals at any point, lending further to the likelihood that Brian and Roger did them in 2014.
The multi-layered guitars might be 2014 - it depends the original track was just a single take demo, or if it's possible that Brian did some overdubbing in 1983.
I don't know about the guitar solo - many people have speculated that because it's kind of similar to that in Hammer to Fall, it's possible that he used the idea in Hammer to Fall once they'd decided against using Let Me In. However, I think it's possible that the solo was recorded in 2014; again, if we assume that the original track was just a demo with no overdubs, then Brian would have only played rhythm guitar. However, he may have then recorded the solo in 1983, and maybe even did the multi-layered parts of it then too. There's really little way of knowing for sure.

We have Brian's (supposedly-)unreliable memory to work with. Or Roger's (supposedly-)reliable one. :-)

Well it's not like they'd need to be able to remember what they did in 1983, they'd just need to know what they added a couple of months ago.

Nice one @tomchristie22 :-)

I gave Anita's version another listen to last night.
There seems to be more of a 'warmth' and 'fullness' in Brian's guitar sound than on the new release. Can only speculate that he was forced to simulate the tone as close as possible to the original due to 'leakage' and the inability to erase the original guitar.
Unlike the MIH tracks, maybe it was done to sound a bit more like the era of when it was created. Just speculation.
All of Brian's guitar sound in that span sounds, or was mixed, rather 'cold' to my ears.

actually Freddie does sing some of the backing vocals about a minute in, but that's all.

Ah, you're right

I wish that Freddie sang more in that free style. He did it more in the '70s, especially on Somebody To Love, for instance.

I like it. It could have easily been on The Works as it's just as good/bad as Open Windows, Treat it up or Man on the Prowl. I can see some resemblance with the main chord structure of Hammer to Fall but I would besurprised if that even played a part on it being shelved.
On the resemblance I'm referring to the whole A - D/A Brian-esque cliche also used on Tear it up, AKOM, WWRY, it's late, etc. Although Let me in its not on the same key you can feel the same vibe and it kinda resembles a slightly slower version of HTF during the outtro.[/QUOTE]
That 'cliche' you're talking about was hardly original with Brian............listen to Start Me Up or Crazy Train (the same chords!)

Bang on, guys.
I'm not entirely certain who first used this riff - Keith Richards or Paul Kossoff in Free (on All Right Now). Any guitar historians here?
I'm not a Stones encyclopedia, but the earliest Stones song I can think of with that riff is Brown Sugar. So is Kossoff the answer? Or is there someone else in the 60s who is responsible?

I reopened this thread as I don't want to start a new one just to ask a simple question which is: why wasn't LMIYHA reworked for Made in Heaven since there seemed to be a substantial demo available (unlike for example You Don't Fool Me).
But just a point about the conversation above -- Brown Sugar was written in 1969 and performed at Altamont that year. However, it wasn't released until 1971. Richards was shown the open G tuning by Ry Cooder. All Right Now was released in 1970 but I don't know when it was written. So if it's a choice between the two, then 'Keef' wins, but it wasn't totally his idea, it was also Cooder's.

Good question Holly. Maybe they didn’t feel it fitted with the rest of the material? Personally I think it could have worked on MIH and would have chosen it over a re-working of My Life Has Been Saved (I prefer the original version). But it does raise the question what else is there lurking in the archives? Hopefully a few more gems that have been overlooked.

I don't think they had the technology to complete LMIYHA for Made In Heaven because Brian has often said how useful protools were in completing it.
