What Young Music Fan said plus the fact that they probably forgot this song existed. They might've been looking through the archives for Made In Heaven but finding the right tapes isn't as organised as you'd think. Things can get mislabelled or misplaced, get stolen or just get thrown out.

The song was forgotten about and only turned up over the last few years, hence getting a small remake and put on Queen forever.

So in 1993, when Brian began work on Made in Heaven, he had already forgotten about the song he wrote and recorded with Queen for The Works (1984), and then re-recorded with his missus in 1988?

I would guess it wasn't chosen as they already had a track from Brian's solo work, A track from Rogers Solo work and two from Freddies album.

Maybe Roger and Brian wanted equal amounts of writers royalties and this one credited to Brain would tip it in his favour a little too much.

Or maybe it was just one too many ballads?

It would fit in a nice continuity as it references let me live nicely.

There is an early "The Works" promo tape (and also an slightly different master) that features a 13 songs tracklist which includes LMIYHA and Man Made Paradise (which also might have made it to "Hot Space"), as well as Man On Fire and Let Me Live, or even I Go Crazy depending on which item we're talking about. It definitely was considered to be released back in 1983-84.

any links that go to prove the existence of the 13-track master?

A brief story about this cassette.
It was me who found this tape, along with the Garden Lodge tapes way back in about 1995/6. I was searching through one of Feebies boxes looking for records and came across these gems.
Although both cassette tapes for the GL recordings were inside their boxes, 'The Works' one was indeed empty.[/QUOTE]
My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I'd swear I've seen pics of the cassette label with such tracklist. In any case, I think it's common knowledge among collectors that this item does indeed exist. I have virtually no doubt it's real.

I wonder if the removal of those tracks is why The Works is (or feels) so short. But then The Game also feels short.

well, ye. valid point.

the Game does (also) feel shorter than it should.
I suppose once you include It's A Beautiful Day, Sandbox, a couple of Roger solo tracks and the two early Flash tracks...there's plenty that could've lengthened the recording.

Well, maybe there was stuff held back from The Game for Flash Gordon. But also, as you allude to, some of the stuff had to be pulled for e.g. copyright reasons.

the strangest thing about Let Me Live? - i'm sure I read somewhere that the working title was actually "Another Piece of My Heart" - so they absolutely knew what they were doing. and it' not like 3/4 of the band - who were in bands in the late 60s didn't hear the Joplin track a lot.

there's no way - that one decade later you can have complete amnesia for a rock classic...unless, of course, said amnesia is elective.

Well... the 1995 version had to be edited before it was included in the album for that very reason. We do have it as well.

Funny thing:
I made a digital playlist of this exact tracklist to find out what te flow of the album would have been when this would have been the final tracklist, and something funny happened when hearing 'Let Me Live' and 'It's A Hard Life' next to eachother.

When you listen to the final piano-line of 'Let Me Live' and imagine it doesn't fade out, it fits perfectly into the intro of 'It's A Hard Life'.
So I tried this, edited them together, and indeed these two tracks fit perfectly to eachother.
LML ends in the same chords as the start of IAHL, same instrumentation based on mostly piano and both have a somewhat 'classical feel'.

Listen here for yourself to find out what you think:

Listen to the transition from LML to IAHL at 4:30 in particular.

So Let me Live, It's a hard life and Let Me In can be a conjoined medley of sorts?
