I also soon noticed it when I first saw that video. Well...singing politely with being accurate to every inch of the score would sound monotonous on the live stages especially while heavy numbers, thinking that one should sing heavy ones emotionally and strikingly over the sounds of electric guitars and drums. About that time, I feel he too strained himself trying to express his emotion as strikingly as he could. But his "over-singing" would be okay because it's Rock...imo, it doesn't matter in the passage of that tune. And again I think Ealrs Court concert is one of their greatest ones from many viewpoints.
Hmmm, I tend to agree that live he wasn't that good. (In response to someone saying he sucked live). I mean he's a good singer live undoubtedly but only in the studio did he really come to life. Now inevitably there will be an avalanche of people trumpeting how good he was live and stuff but singers like Axl Rose and Chris Cornell do sound almost as good live as in the studio, for example the Guns & Roses Live Era 87 - 93 cd is amazing, Axl Rose's voice is almost perfect.
Now Freddie Mercury, while still sounding very good live, is nowhere near what he was in studio. He usually sings an octave lower and lets Roger Taylor take over the high stuff in We Are The Champions, Another One Bites The Dust. He never does his falsetto on stage either. This is no way detracts from his aura or mystique, he is the best singer ever, but only in the studio.

how can you take a person seriously, when you bring up axle rose as a singer, he was one of the worst singer ever live and studio. so disregard the last comments.
i think the person who originally wrote this discussion was simply bringing up some harmless fuck ups, in no way did he say freddie sucked live, i think anyone paying attention knows freddie had his ups and downs, but way more ups, 'live aid' was simply one of the best live performes ever from a rock singer, the rainbow in 74 was one of the best i'v seen, and to put down a great singer by comparing him with crap singers like axle rose and rushes geddy lee (even though i love rush) is show alot of ingnorance, any show from 74 to 77 and 80 to 82 were simply among the greatest any rock singer has ever done from my perspective, but people get a grip, axle and geddy are not in the same world as freddie, wake up.
As is to be expected he was better earlier in the show than later. For instance, (I'll just say Wembley '86 because most people have seen it?) during One Vision his voice is in better shape and sounds better than in Big Spender (near the other end of the show). he even hits those crazy high notes he missed in Budapest. Ok - not album quality but cut the guy a break, he was 40 and it was a LONG LONG European tour.
As for Earls Court - brilliant show. Despite pitch problems (during songs like Death on Two Legs) it's a great bloody show, the guy was on fire. On some tracks, I swear the band is playing at album quality (even if the singing wavers from time to time). Consider Bring Back that Leroy Brown. It almost sounds like a karaoke track.

My intention was never to diss Freddie or diminish his talent. He was still the best frontman and live performer who has ever existed. I mean, Pele, Maradona, Platini, Cruyff, have all missed penalties. Does that make them less talented players than what we consider they were once?

Did you ever listen to bootlegs? I am sure this live era CD is full of overdubs. On bootlegs, Axl sounds very very poor. Actually, one of the worst live-singers I know.
yes, he is one of the worst, i don't care if people disagree on plant or mercury or paul rodgers, even labrie from dream theater as someone mentioned, but axle? you obviously don't know the art of singing, as far as freddie, anyone who knows about queen knows freddie never wanted to sound like the record, in his own words he said "that's boring" actually i think he sounds better at times live, listen to 'play the game' at the bowl, or 'sheer heart attack' are examples of him sounding better live.
I have to say that Axl had his good and bad moments. He could be a hell of a great performer if he felt like it, as well as a complete mediocre asshole if he wasn't in the mood to perform.
Son, I think you need to realize I was being sarcastic and only mocking the inevitable sycophants who were going to come in and defend Freddie (edit: like our dear friend Sharon G. below me). I thought that was painfully obvious by my closing line.

I wasn't aware that Axl's voice was nowhere near as good in bootlegs, and I concede that if this is the case, then he obviously isn't as good live as Freddie.
And I believe that I do know a reasonable amount about singing as well, not wishing to incite more negative discussion but I was a bit irked with the disparaging comments saying I know nothing about singing. I wasn't aware that the GnR live cd was (likely to be) heavily overdubbed. At the tribute concert I think Axl did a rather good rendition of the heavy part of Bohemian Rhapsody, he hit the high notes and was on pitch.
I disagree regarding stuff like Play The Game at the bowl concert. It sounds much better in studio IMO. And the Live Killers cd also has overdubs if you read that website that has a rather in depth analysis of the recordings from the album, especially on Don't Stop Me Now.
Slightly off topic, but does Justin Hawkins sing as high live as he does on the album? I'm rather curious.
