I heard it cracking at the Wembley performance on the 12th, and he wouldn't sing as high as normal. And his voice cracks when he says sunshine on To Much Love Will Kill You..but I still love him... and I love his swearing at the wembley...

rwon041 you are right about the performance of Axle at the tribute concert. I think he did great! I am not a fan of GnR in particular but I like to listen to them sometimes. In any way Freddie had a great voice.
B
The fact that he sung songs differently is what makes listening to bootlegs interesting. If he sung just like the albums, with the band all playing like the albums, why would we bother listening to them live?

that's a great point, queen never tried to sound exackly like the album, anyone who knows anything about the band knows this, and i still think queen's live version of 'sheer heart attack' and 'somebody to love' will give the studio versions a run for it's money, but anyone who actually thinks axle is a great singer obviously knows very little, and by the way, i cringed when i heard axle fuck up those queen classics. slash was the true talent of "roses" just because brian praises axle doesn't mean shit, he praises everyone, including robbie williams, britney spears and the rest of the crap. thank god he chose a great singer in paul rodgers to sing these classics. to end this, wannabe queenzoners never seem to amaze me, the majority of ya know nothing about music, the next thing "41" will say is "joey ramone" or "cobain" was a greater guitar player than hendrix, clapton or brian may, it would be typical. oh, i'm sure you think "cobain" was a better singer than mercury. wake up people, your reading the "rolling stone" to much. get a grip. i also have fav fuck ups, but to say freddie wasn't a great live singer, give me a break. axle=sucks.

Good Heavens,Axl Rose is a "screamer" not a singer! (For those who live in México, there is this T.V. show called "El chavo del ocho"-"The kid from No. 8", there is a sidekick of the main character called "la chilindrina" -Don't ask what it means-every time she started weeping,it got me thinking about Axl Rose's singing skills!ha, ha.)He screams as if somebody was squeezing his nuts real hard! By the way,He is just a Freddie Mercury wanna-be!(he has stated Freddiee's influence on him several times)That's why he's nowhere to be found nusically speaking! Freddie is dead but he's truly ALIVE, Axl is alive but he's truly DEAD!

Are you mad? Go out there and try singing in front of 70000 people and come back doing stupid comments like that...asshole.

Mike Hunt, no one on this forum has even come even close to suggesting anything like you've mentioned. Majority of us know nothing about music, somehow implying that you know a great deal more than the rest of us? You might not mean that but then again you might, in which case, get over yourself.

PainPleasure, I totally agree with you that the guy who said Freddie sucked live is wrong but calling him an asshole? lol, depth of feelings run pretty deep round here.

Ok then, general synopsis. Freddie Mercury was a really good live singer, much better than Axl Rose.

I personally think that he couldn't have sung the songs like he did on the albums because that would be too difficult for him as they encompass alot of falsetto and really high notes in head voice and that obviously puts a great strain on his vocal chords, I mean looking at the queenconcerts.com website and the incredible number of live shows he performed it's not suprising that he wouldn't want to try sound as good as the albums for the sake of preserving his voice. There are a few times when he was spot on, such as Live Aid, and I think that since he knew the whole world was watching he put in a great vocal performance. Newcastle 1979 was also a good show. But more often than not, if a song had a really high note on the album (i.e. Under Pressure, falsetto on Somebody To Love) then he wouldn't do it, as it was too hard for him to produce on stage each time.

Peace out everyone.

"Martinez" you bring up the point i'm trying to make, "41" and some others don't get it, there's a difference between singing and screaming, some think axle's smreaming and high pitch wining is somehow singing, when in fact he's screaming, even when freddie is not hitting those high notes, and his voice is cracking, at least he's singing, it's easy for a screamer to scream than a singer to somehow be perfect. as far as thinking i'm better than the rest of queenzoners is simply not true, some yes, maybe even most, but not even close to all. you didn't hear me try and put down the original "fuck up" poster, why? because i know Mr. jingles knows his shit, even if he somehow agreed with you.

I totally agree with your point of view Mike Hunt!

Go wash your mouth, freddie sucked live??? The reason why Queen became so big was the larger than life perfomance freddie gave on stage. His voice is one of the finest in rock history.

Come on, being a fan doesn't mean you cant be criticing. He never sang the high notes and always muffled them aways by singing a lower note. And a lot of his high note singing sounded like screams, especially in the later years (Magic tour: Lap of the Gods, and Hammer to Fall for example) And performance is not just singing. Robert Plant is also a great performer, but he wasn't great live.
I didn't mean that Freddie sucked, that was a wrong choice of words. But he definatly wasn't the great singer he was in the studio. And definatly isn't one of the best live singers of all time. I do think he has one of the nicest souding voices of all time. But thats too different things

amen to that FriedChicken.

I'M NOT TRYING TO SAY AXL ROSE WAS BETTER THAN FREDDIE, I'm just saying his live voice sounded more like his studio voice.

And Mike Hunt, your forum contributions are always a good read so keep them coming.

Maybe your favourite singer is Robbie Williams, ASSHOLE!!!. All singers when they perform live they're out of tune. If you watch Live 8, maybe you saw Roger Waters sang very out of tune.

From Chile.

I didn't realize Roger Waters was actually performing from Chile. They did an amazing job making it look like a real reunion though. But that would explain being out of tune, you know, with the satellite delays and all..

But Freddie's screw-ups make him all the more charming in my opinion. I'll never understand why his piano flubs were left intact on the albums though. Ever heard the karaoke mix of Don't Stop Me Now? The fruity monster-toothed bastard must have really been having an off day. Charming though.

Geez, chill out!! Just because I point out that Freddie fucked up on stage, doesn't mean that I think he's a horrible singer.

C'mon, this is one of the most interesting threads that we've had in a long time, because it takes us away from the now so cliche posts about "Freddie being the grestest frontman/singer of all time", which by now are getting boring. I seriously think he was indeed the greatest frontman ever, but it doesn't hurt anyone to remember a funny mishap when Freddie had a rooster moment.
