I'm not picking on WWTLF. I like the song. I just don't think with a name like Absolute Hits, you should leave a No. 1 Hit off in favour of a No. 24 Hit. Shouldn't this be the best of the best?
· Member since
At the risk of getting involved in a topic I care little about..I would guess WWTLF sold more than Innuendo, even though it charted lower. By the 1990s, singles sales in the UK were falling, and it didn't take much to reach no.1 at that point. So it may be record sales rather than chart position that QP are using. More likely though that its inclusion is driven by Brian's ego...

I Want To Break Free is officially Track 18

i) We Will Rock You                             UK #2 (via "Champions," "WWRY" was never an A-side in the UK)
ii) We Are The Champions                    UK #2
iii) Radio Ga Ga                                    UK #2
iv) Another One Bites The Dust               UK #7
v) I Want It All                                        UK #3
vi) Crazy Little Thing Called Love              UK #2
vii) A Kind Of Magic                                UK #3
viii) Under Pressure                                UK #1
ix) One Vision                                        UK #7
x) You're My Best Friend                        UK #7
xi) Don't Stop Me Now                            UK #9
xii) Killer Queen                                     UK #2
xiii) These Are The Days Of Our Lives     UK #1
xiv) Who Wants To Live Forever                UK #24 (the first non-UK Top 10 hit here! [sigh])
xv) The Seven Seas Of Rhye                    UK #10
xvi) Heaven For Everyone                        UK #2
xvii) Somebody To Love                          UK #2
xviii) I Want To Break Free                      UK #2

I think it's safe to say The Show Must Go On and Bohemian Rhapsody are going to close out the collection. TSMGO and WWTLF I'm still kind of reeling from, as they left a #1 Hit in Innuendo off in favour of a #24 Hit.

You should celebrate "Who Wants To Live Forever"!!! It's a wonderful song, even if it undermines your theory a bit. : -)))

Ah, your theory held fast. As of now, it's the only one which didn't make the UK-top 10. It's still possible to dismiss it as a "random unpredictable variant of very low incidence". : -)))

I'd prefer: One Vision - Don't Stop Me Now - You're My Best Friend - Killer Queen.

Just a curiosity, I'd love to know that: I always thought We Are The Champions had been a #1 UK hit. Well, it turns out it wasn't; is there a way of knowing which song topped We Are The Champions back then? It'd be fun to know.

Sure about that? I thought it was a David Soul song, whose names escapes me.

Hey, that's fascinating. Thanks a million. Oh muuull of kintyyyyre...oh mist rolling...da-la-la...it's such a beautiful tune. "We Are The Champions" is my favorite Queen song, though. But it's fair play, I guess the song is good enough to have topped We Are The Champions. I love Paul's voice.

Da-da-lala-laaaa...da-laaa-laaa-laaa-laaaaaa...tin-tin-tin-tin, da-laaa...I don't know the lyrics, but I remember the melody. I remember it being played at home. Lovely!

Do you know what songs topped each one of these Queen's hits in the U.K?

This is so fascinating. Who dared to top somebody to love?

-------------

To Rhyeking: Yeah...it's weird. Maybe Brian thinks Innuendo is already fairly represented by "These Are The Days..."? But choosing a 24th is akward indeed...the song is wonderful, but if the aim is releasing the absolute hits, it's a weird choice. So it seems "Save Me" and "Play The Game" didn't make the top-10 list. And the only song by the band, the only single one I absolutely hate, which is Another One Bites The Dust, is always there...damn! I love Deacon's songs, "Spread Your Wings" is one of my favorites, but I hate Another One Bites The Dust with all my heart. It's irritating. The tempo, the belching-Freddie, the lyrics..."Fun It" from Jazz is better...well..."Fun It" is a horrible song, but I like it in a way, it's cool and it doesn't get on my nerves. Another One Bites The Dust makes me really angry.

Weird the reactions music can provoke.

Where's Love of My Life? It didn't make the top-10 either? It's fascinating to know these things.

Anyway, this is interesting:

) We Will Rock You (Brian)
ii) We Are The Champions (God)
iii) Radio Ga Ga (Roger)
iv) Another One Bites The Dust (John)
v) I Want It All (Brian)
vi) Crazy Little Thing Called Love (God)
vii) A Kind Of Magic (Roger under the guidance of God)
viii) Under Pressure (God) * and Bowie
ix) One Vision (Roger, according to himself)
x) You're My Best Friend (John)
xi) Don't Stop Me Now (God)
xii) Killer Queen (God)
xiii) These Are The Days Of Our Lives (Roger)
xiv) Who Wants To Live Forever (Brian)
xv) The Seven Seas Of Rhye (God)
xvi) Heaven For Everyone (Roger)
xvii) Somebody To Love (God)
xviii) I Want To Break Free (John)

So that: Brian (3), Roger (5), John (3), God (7)

Not a proper source here but I remember reading somewhere that Somebody to Love was kept off the UK #1 by Chicago's "If you leave me now", which I think it's a beautiful song.

A quick look at good ol' Wikipedia tells me that the Chicago hit was indeed a number one in starting on November 13th 1976 and stayed there for 3 weeks so I guess the info adds up.

That's a fantastic Chicago tune!  In my opinion, the band was and still is underrated.  I love their earlier stuff the most though (especially the album Chicago II).  Absolute classic!

Why do all discuss this release as another Greatest HITS compilation with the main criteria of track inclusion is the chart position? There's no word "Hits" in the title. I see it as the compilation of greatest tracks from the entire band career choosen by its (remaining) members + JB of course.

if it was then it was 'dont give up on us baby' or 'silver lady' which is just a travesty on a par with Joe Dulce keeping Ultravox's Vienna off the top spot!
if i was on 'who wants to be a slumdog millionaire' and the question came up i would pick Mull of Kintyre over David Soul though..

Wattsamatter you, gotta no respect...for David Soul?

You might be right -- my memory isn't what it used to be. For ages I've been believing that The Police's 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' kept 'Under Pressure' from reaching no.1 in the UK, but in fact they were both no.1 hits. Plus, I recall seeing Brian May on Noel Edmunds Swap Shop, talking about his sixpence, but apparently I'm the only one with that memory!

Actually, the competition site goes out of its way to call it a Greatest Hits album:

http://www.queenonline.com/tracklistcomp

And the package shot News page even calls it a Greatest Hits collection:

http://www.queenonline.com/news/1355/

The name is Absolute Greatest (I was refering to it as Absolute Hits, so sue me).

Either way, all I've ever argued for is consistency. Top 10 UK hits would be a consistent standard. If they said it was going to be a track listing of Queen's most popular songs, it would pretty much be '70s material + The Game (and maybe Flash), which is basically the 1981 Greatest Hits album.

I should also repeat here that the selection fans could guess for did NOT include anything from the debut album, likely because as popular as Keep Yourself Alive is now, it failed to chart at all in 1973.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. It is what it is.
i think you will find it was Saturday Superstore with Mike Read that Brian appeared on with the sixpence.it was around the time of the release of Star Fleet as they played the video too..[my memory is apparantly a little bit better than yours lol]

Great song that deserved the first place for as much as I like "Somebody To Love". So both songs' - "We Are The Champions" and "Somebody To Love" - defeat in the charts was fair.
