They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel. Why should they? They've sold a combined 300 million records. They just wanted to create music that made them happy. There are a few strong tracks on the album (Time To Shine, Some Things That Glitter, Say It's Not True, Surf's Up), and quite a few generic ones... but certainly no piss poor tracks.
The problem wasn't so much the music but the fact that they used the Queen name. Most people walked past the record in the shop, as the average person sees Queen as Freddie Mercury. A new name and adequate marketing would have given it a supergroup vibe, a la Velvet Revolver or Audioslave, and it probably would have sold far better. The Cosmos Rocks is no more derivative than U2's last two records which sold millions.

Good point, but "TCR" is not in the same league as "Chickenfoot", "Velvet Revolver" or "Audioslave"
"Chickenfoot" is too much fun. Those guys blew away fears that their album was going to be yet another of those bloated, pretentious, bland and boring "supergroups".......like "Q+PR"
The reality is "TCR" would've been marketed and sold better had it been a better album. Nobody, not even the band had much faith in what they delivered. Had they, they would've got behind it.

I dont think so. I agree with the others (and I was the first in this thread to say so) that it would have fared much better commercially and critically had it not been marketed as Q+PR. They should have called it Starfleet!!! ^_^

I like TCR much more than Audioslave and Velvet Revolver. Not sure about Chickenfoot though. I'll have to get the album sometime.

Chickenfoot kicks ass. Satriani, Chad Smith, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony? Come on. Hope they work more in the future like Zeppelin did or unlike QPR!

Going to see Chickenfoot at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues the end of the month. Should be fun. Speaking of supergroups....how 'bout Them Crooked Vultures?? Really excited about that one!

That's fine, but you're in the minority. Do grab "Chickenfoot" though
Even Brian May loves them!

You know, at least when it flopped like it did, it wouldn't have been so embarrassing for us old school "Queen" fans!

Me too. Now that's someone I could live with collaborating with Roger & Brian, Dave Grohl.
His credentials speak for themself, and at least he's somebody with an idea of how to make rock music in this day and age that people like.
The Foos & May's "Have A Cigar" rocks in a way that "TCR" could only dream of.

Different styles, of course. TCR can´t be compared musically to VR, Audioslave or Chickenfoot, as they play (played, in Audioslave´s case) in the hard-rock league.
I knew what I was going to get when purchasing those albums from those superbands, as well as more or less knew what I was going to get with TCR. No "operatic/vaudeville Queen" expected, so I wasn´t disappointed with the final result and still defend the album. The only thing I miss is a truly hard-rocker number from Brian (Still Burnin´ is fine, but it´s not that HTF, Headlong, etc type you could expect from him).
ps: go and get Chickenfoot´s album asap !! pure fun !!!! can´t wait to see them live !!

It's actually worse than bad: it's embarassing.
Pay attention, close attention to Surf's Up. It's serious stuff. It's way worse than being I don't know how many degrees and being called "Mr. Fahrenheit". The guy is 80 and all he can do is give you these lyrics?
Delilah alone is better than the whole album. There was some dignity to Delilah. The guy actually composed a song for the kitten he loved and managed to make it sound as if she were singing it. I came to appreciate Delilah's concept over time.
But The Cosmos Rock will forever tarnish Queen's beautiful and important legacy.

Hi Yara, nice to read you again :)
All oppinions are respected, of course. And I understand there´s a lot of people giving much importance to the lyrics. Surf´s Up annoys you; I, musically, can´t stop enjoying it.
I´m on the side of those don´t giving relevance to the use of the name "Queen" in TCR. My reaction would have been the same if they called themselves "Potato+Paul Rodgers". Music is what matters to me. And I like the music delivered in TCR, wich doesn´t belong to "Queen´s beautiful and important legacy", as the Queen I leant to love since I was 8 years old in 1984 ended with MIH. The rest, NOBY included, is "of course another story", although labelled as Queen too, fact that I don´t really care.
ps: I love Delilah, too !!
