I would disagree (not argue) with some of your post (especially Queen I...love side two). I really enjoyed reading it.
Will just touch on 'Man On The Prowl': what is it about me that believes it's one of only a handful of good tracks on that LP? My Midwest rock 'n roll roots, perhaps? It's upbeat, has piano, 'real' drums, no synths, is a good album side closer, and is better than anything on side one of 'Hot Space'...imho.
(I avoid Roger's two offerings on that album...but I totally enjoy the Wembley encore version)
From AKOM onward....'bingo'

@Bohemian.
Factually I can't argue with any of ' It's upbeat, has piano, 'real' drums, no synths' All true.
It's still absolute pants as a song though, :-)
I think one of the joys of a band like Queen is that there is such a variation in the songs they made that it is perfectly possible for two people to love the band equally, yet have such wildy differing views.
It's particularly fascinating that we have such different opinions on The Works, especially as we appear to have similar views on what came after it.
For the Record, my favourite tracks on that album are probably the two Roger ones you loathe so much. Though I agree that GaGa live is more powerful than the studio version.
In fact given its a nine track album, We must agree on at least one song being in both of our top 5 tracks from the Works...
So here are my top 5 in random order, Do we match on more than 1?
GaGa, Machines, Hammer, Hard Life, Break Free.

without trying to sidetrack this topic too much...

Actually, no, but with a disclaimer: I much prefer the HTF 45 version, the Break Free 45 version (despite the mix and synth), and A Hard Life extended version.
In the USA, a 'Keep Passing the Open Windows/Tear It Up' single release prior to the LP would have been a great success (and I know many really don't like 'Windows' either, which boggles my mind).
Regarding 'She Makes Me' and 'Sweet Lady'. Back in the day, one listened to a side straight though on vinyl or tape. They both 'fit'. SMM sounded so 'British' to me, and SL was a needed rocker (and headphones were such a treat for that '39 ending/SL beginning bit). A perfect fit before 'Seaside'.

Anyone not liking Sweet Lady should listen to the drums and bass work in the double time part of the song. Can be heard very clearly here, not drowning in guitar overdubs:

I've never really liked Friends Will Be Friends, I think it was a bad attempt at writing another WATC.[/QUOTE]
I've always thought so too.

I like the guitar on FWBF. And actually the rest of the song.

Wow, I knew Delilah was never a favourite but it's really quite hated it seems. I'll always defend it, it's as light hearted as it is heartfelt, and it probably also has to do with me being a cat person that I can identify with the lyrics. Ride The Wild Wind from that album is so much worse and the mix of I Can't Live With You has a very cheesy and dated early nineties feel.
I don't think that The Loser In The End is a bad song at all, I really quite like it. It probably doesn't really fit the album well but I never disliked the song for that reason.
I basically like or love almost everything from the no synths days. I don't mind Hot Space at all really, I honestly think Body Language and Staying Power are actually better than Calling All Girls and/or Las Palabras. Both quite mediocre songs and Cool Cat is wonderful.
Hijack My Heart is definitely one of the worst Queen songs. It's just basically sterile 80's chart pop drivel musically. The lyrics are also cringeworthy.
I don't really like the Freddie solo remakes on Made In Heaven. Especially I Was Born To Love You because of that specific repetitive lyric throughout the whole song. I'm not a fan of a lot of things on Made In Heaven though. I do think its version of My Life Has Been Saved was an improvement on the original b-side version.
And then we have Forever, if that's worthy of including in this thread. I think most everyone dislikes There Must Be More To Life Than This. I also think the new ballad arrangement really doesn't fit Love Kills. It's completely out of place for that song. It might have fit if another take of Freddie's vocals to that song had existed that doesn't sound like he's singing to a synth pop song. Which he was.

Ah yes. I do like it but it sounds like Brian hastily recorded the guitar part and then forgot to do it over. That's the one Queen song with an obvious mistake / ghost note in it I think.

That's the good thing about that solo. It's not overdone/overwritten, just a rather spontaneous few bars of guitar goodness.

I never really liked that song myself....probably my least favorite Miracle b-side actually!
It's not bad lyrically, except for the one bit.......
Stuck in the traffic
Stuck at the lights what do I see
Some stupid bimbo in a fast car next to me
She takes off
Imagine my disgust
OK, how did Roger know some girl in a car next to him was a stupid bimbo? Even if so, what's so disgusting about that? Stupid bimbos have places to go too, I guess...........LOL

I like that song myself! The only thing thats gets me (for some reason I'm focused on lyrics today!! definitely unusual for me).........the guy goes back home alone at the end......what, he's never going to meet her again??....spent a week with the girl and couldn't even get her phone number? (unless she was married, then it might make more sense)
This is about as deep into lyrical analysis as I ever get..........lol

On wich second exactly that note is? I listened it and found 3 differnet notes during the song that sounded almost off-key.
