Stick: You were so unfortunate to not have been slagged off about Queen but there again the 1990s were a very different generation and we were introduced about AIDS and that it affects everyone. People were starting to educate themselves about sexuality and gender. Only a year after Freddie passed away and they found a medication that stops death from Hiv,
Poor Freddie had missed the boat, were others like Holly Johnson and Andy Bell are on medications and still with us.
I am enjoying reading all the posts and experiences you guys have been through because of your love for Queen!

Early nineties up to mid nineties when I grew up and discovered Queen, everyone was into Euro house music and Grunge.
Queen was a very unpopulair band to like at the time. It started to change a bit after the Made In Heaven album. I never really got mocked for it, but most kids found my music taste a bit weird haha.
Having said that, kids into metal always liked it when I was wearing a Queen t-shirt. Queen always got a huge amount of respect in the metal scene.

@ happystar Don't you mean fortunate? ;-) Yeah it must have helped that by the time I went to what some would call high school people were already knowledgeable about AIDS and pretty accepting of people who liked the same sex. At least where I grew up.
Don't really understand what you mean by educating themselves about gender. I would have thought that no education was necessary after the genitals were spotted at birth. Of course, if both kinds were present, a little education might help understand why it happened.

@ people on streets In my experience I'm one of only a few people left who still enjoys euro house / happy hardcore on a daily basis. I've accepted how weird I am though.

Stick: My apologies yeah i meant fortunate lol
When i mentioned gender i was meaning what peoples sexuality was like been Bi sexual or Gay.
People were starting to accept other sexualities other than hetrosexual.
Thank god to "stonewall" for standing up for the LGBT community and who knows if Freddie and Jim were still here they may have got married!

I feel ya! Although I'm far away from enjoying it on a daily basis, I never shy away from a good euro house song or two! Strong female vocal, fake rapper, catchy beat. I love it. The nineties were the golden era of euro house music anyway. All this EDM these days is so fake...

I got into Queen in 1991, when i was in 3rd grade and i must say that i have seen Queen go and out of fashion many times, especially in the 90's.
In The Netherlands there was some hype around Innuendo, Freddie's death, The Tribute Concert, Made In Heaven and even the Dance Traxx album. They got a great deal of attention from Dutch television as well as MTV, documentaries, magazines and videos were shown regularly on MTV in the early nineties.
I remember one day when i went to gymclass i had a Made in Heaven shirt on (which i got the with the album) kids were flocking to me giving me compliments and telling me their favorite songs off the album, which kind of amazed me as i thought they weren't popular at all. It was either house music or grunge in those days.
The stories in this thread about being called whatever, the gay slurs etc are familiar i must say. One kid went as far as telling me (he was suprised i didn't know) that Roger and Freddie had a thing together and that the band broke up cuz of them...now ain't that something?
Between the release of No-one But You and the 2002 one off Amsterdam gig they were basically out. I got the No-one But You single on my way to school one day and kids were basically asking me why? why bother? Freddie's gone. Move on. I wasn't done yet though, because i was still getting to know the catalogue by collecting their back catalogue.
The Amsterdam gig in 2002 was another thing though, because i got the news that they were going to perform very late so i couldn't attend. So i watched it live on tv and i must say i had mixed feelings about it. The performance lacked soul, they seemed...off. Clearly missing something. Performances were hit and miss and the crowd didn't seem to care for most of the set.
I also remember a class trip (must be mid 90's) when we went to some "amusement" park the busdriver had a mixtape on and all of a sudden '39 came on...i was over the fucking moon. Singing along, while kids were looking at me like i was out of it. I went to the busdriver and gave him some props for that and he himself was asking me how the hell i know this deep cut.. :D
I never cared really that people thought they weren't cool or whatever, because in a way it made me stand out.

I remember I used to dress with t shirts of bands when I was 14/16l. R.E.M. Springsteen, Dylan...and of course Queen. One day, one stupid girl told me, Queen is great music, but is gay! She even doesn't know Queen was a band, se thought Queen was only Freddie! I answered, they were four membes, and yes the singer likes to penetrate another ass, so be carefull with your ass, ashole!

Fairy King: When you mentioned someone told you that Roger & Freddie had something going on together well i have heard those rumours too,
but cannot confirm if that was true or false! A lot of 70s rockers seemed to experiment with men and woman back then, even Bowie & Jagger ended up in bed together!

Freddie and Roger. . . Really?
When was this exactly? Maybe you'd like to share the story in more detail, rumour or not it might be interesting picking through what details you know.
The Fairy Kings friend from the 90's I'd imagine must have read it some where or was told and passed the info on. Kids in school passing around stories is one thing but publicly writing you've heard the same story is worth delving into.
When talking to any of the Queen crew and personal assistants it's clear that there was a huge difference between Freddie and Roger's accommodation arrangements both on tour or when working in over seas studios.

I used to get a lot of "ooh, I didn't know you're gay" type of comments back in the day. I learned how to not care

I remember when I was in high school, back in 1993, we were listening remix " Living On My Own " a lot.
Then a couple of years later, we all were crazy about " You Don't Fool Me ".
I don't know what this is so special about that Freddie was gay. Many musicians, writers, painters, actors, directors are gays ( or were ).
I don't really care about it.
I don't know why I would suddenly say " well, this is a great song but singer is gay and I don't intend to listen to it anymore " . That's nonsense! Are gay people listening only music of gay singers? I don't think so.
I love Queen and Freddie's music and I don't care if someone has prejudice.

Like I say.. it's people just repeating what their dad's said in the 70s. Same as when Arsenal lose and the offspring of Arsenal fans smash up their TVs.
And wives.

No, because I never told anyone. And I'm glad. That's because I made a mistake of telling people I liked Star Wars, and it was pretty bad. Now Star Wars is cool apparently.
