I bet a lot of you on here were mocked in school. But I doubt it was for liking Queen. Hahaha! I amuse myself so.

I got into Queen in 1991, when i was in 3rd grade and i must say that i have seen Queen go and out of fashion many times, especially in the 90's.

In The Netherlands there was some hype around Innuendo, Freddie's death, The Tribute Concert, Made In Heaven and even the Dance Traxx album. They got a great deal of attention from Dutch television as well as MTV, documentaries, magazines and videos were shown regularly on MTV in the early nineties.

I remember one day when i went to gymclass i had a Made in Heaven shirt on (which i got the with the album) kids were flocking to me giving me compliments and telling me their favorite songs off the album, which kind of amazed me as i thought they weren't popular at all. It was either house music or grunge in those days.

The stories in this thread about being called whatever, the gay slurs etc are familiar i must say. One kid went as far as telling me (he was suprised i didn't know) that Roger and Freddie had a thing together and that the band broke up cuz of them...now ain't that something?

Between the release of No-one But You and the 2002 one off Amsterdam gig they were basically out. I got the No-one But You single on my way to school one day and kids were basically asking me why? why bother? Freddie's gone. Move on. I wasn't done yet though, because i was still getting to know the catalogue by collecting their back catalogue.

The Amsterdam gig in 2002 was another thing though, because i got the news that they were going to perform very late so i couldn't attend. So i watched it live on tv and i must say i had mixed feelings about it. The performance lacked soul, they seemed...off. Clearly missing something. Performances were hit and miss and the crowd didn't seem to care for most of the set.

I also remember a class trip (must be mid 90's) when we went to some "amusement" park the busdriver had a mixtape on and all of a sudden '39 came on...i was over the fucking moon. Singing along, while kids were looking at me like i was out of it. I went to the busdriver and gave him some props for that and he himself was asking me how the hell i know this deep cut.. :D

I never cared really that people thought they weren't cool or whatever, because in a way it made me stand out.

In the mid 90s during the grunge period, I cannot possibly quantify how uncool it was to like Queen where I grew up.

Yes, it was very uncool to say the least at that time for me too. It began with teasing, and became worse. I literally had to move away from the town I once lived in because I was bullied so badly.

Bullet: That is awful what you had to go through just because you loved Queen's music.
May i ask are you British or American?

Yes, certainly I got a bit of flack for it, I was at school in the 80s and early 90s.

But really, not so much, because everybody knew Queen were an amazing band, even if it was easy to use Freddie's sexuality to tease fans of the band.

I honestly think if Freddie had not been gay then Queen would not have been so magnificent.
Freddie was flamboyant and very stylish and his sexuality went a long way to get the showman that we had for Queen.

It was awful. Dangerous even.

Went to a Christian school so there was quite a bit of homophobia. Knew a couple people who outright refused to accept Queen as a good band because 'aren't they all gay?'

Isn't it messed up that so many people assumed all members of Queen were gay? Mind boggling.

Yeah a lot of kids at my school years ago, slagged me off for liking Queen, some kid said to the others "There all a bunch of poofs" very sad that kids back then judged
groups by there sexuality to be accepted!

Yep. How cruel and thoughless some people can be.

I've shared before some of the shitty reactions and slights I've encountered over the years. Including the time a family member threw my Queen Greatest Hits cassette that I had just purchased out of disgust.

Yeah, that happened.

Queen is a massive band all over the world and I think the homophobia thing has died down a bit, at least in the US.

I always wonder though how much bigger they'd be if Freddie was straight. Of course that changes the whole dynamic and I certainly don't need that, but it makes me wonder. Because there are a lot of people who will not give them a fair shake because of that one reason. And that's pretty sad.

That's not true these days....Queen are respected in the US, but for some reason bands with a more simple straight forward Rock sound are more popular. Nothing to do with being gay. These other bands have the cool factor going for them. Rock fans admit Queen were better than those bands, but they rather listen to the basic Rock sound than songs like The Million Watlz or Good Company. ACDC and Kiss will always be more popular than Yes, but who was better?
