Wizard, you're from Canada right?
Yep, sure am.

Even here, homophobia was still pretty bad in the 90s.

early 80s...and, from a UK perspective, seemed to be chasing the American market with every release.
If anything, tunes like Break Free, Ga Ga and Magic were attempts to be suitable for BBC radio. By that time, BBC certainly had "a sound", the same way most radio stations did then (and still do now). There's very little that was American about Queen's sound after The Game, as far as I can see.

America is such a religious place and the coloured people over there are head strong about sexuality, so if your anything but straight
you get ignored or verbally abused and i know it still goes on today.
2018 and people are still outraged if two men love each other, and in places like Jamaica, Africa , Russia, vigilantes go around beaten the gay people up and in some instances killing them. China must now be miffed when Wham toured there country as they had no idea George Michael was a gay man!

In the mid 90s during the grunge period, I cannot possibly quantify how uncool it was to like Queen where I grew up.
That's strange, we are quite the same age and i started being fond of Queen in 1993-1995 era and Queen was quite popular at school, kind of hype after Freddie Mercury death. I had a lot of friends who had the first GH and we were listening to Queen together. I'm a Nirvana fan too but it came much later, I had some friends who were Nirvana fans in 1993-95 and never had any problem with them.
You grew up in France. Europe is just far more forward thinking than most places in the world. Canada was still stuck in homophobia back then (and much of it still is).

I know Queen were huge Most of the world...I was curious what their popularity is in Canada. Aside from the 90's Grunge era, how big is Queen there In General?

As big as in the US for sure. They're in public consciousness still, and in the top 20 or 30 "older" acts that people know and like. Definitely more popular than they were 20 years ago.

But still a far cry from being second to the Beatles in the UK.

Fairy King: When you mentioned someone told you that Roger & Freddie had something going on together well i have heard those rumours too,
but cannot confirm if that was true or false! A lot of 70s rockers seemed to experiment with men and woman back then, even Bowie & Jagger ended up in bed together!
It honestly wouldn't surprise me. The 70s saw a major sexual revolution. It was chic for guys to look both ways - Bowie and the glam movement made it all acceptable. Tonnes of famous musicians and actors gave it a try, some even before then.

But mostly very quietly. The Bowie and Jagger story got out, as did Marlon Brando and Richard Pryor - but most kept it under wraps.

I think Roger is a typical straight man...don't think he would go that route with Freddie lol....though nothing shocks me anymore.

Queen are still "Record Collectors" most popular band out there and bigger than The Beatles!

What i meant Mike was Queen are the most collectable band as far as The Record Collector audience is concerned as there was a poll a few years back and Queen came out top at no1. The Beatles were no2 and Elvis no3.
