The Blu Ray info lists the audio as DTS HD Master in 7.1 surround. Does this intimate that they HAVE done a new mix of the audio, or is this just a trick they can pull using some software on the original (awful) stereo mix, like they do now to create their '5.1' mixes on Wembley etc.??
I´m talking from memory here, but i believe that the Wembley 25 years edition contains real 5.1 mix, since they were able to find the multitracks somewhere in L.A.
I don´t know about the 7.1 surround thing, but if the band have the tapes i don´t see why they would "cheat" the sound. In the Wembley 2003 it was the best they could do at the time, because they couldn´t find the original tapes.

It wasn't the multitracks they were missing (QPL had them all along, but were too lazy to re-mix it properly from scratch - especially if they may or may not have the overdub stems available!), it was the analogue stereo mix reel tape from Brian Malouf's 1991/92 mix of the show that was missing until a few years ago.
The 2003 DVD and CD "remaster" used the 1992 CD digital masters. The reason they made a big deal about the analogue stereo master being found was because, with regards to syncing the audio to the video, it's more preferable to use an analogue master which can be transferred in high resolution as opposed to using a digital copy previously rendered in 44.1kHz/16-bit that could introduce minor artifacts when shifting the playback rate or timing in order to ensure it syncs to the video as close to 100% as possible - although most average joes probably won't notice the artifacts immediately.
The Friday night show however was mixed from scratch since that show was originally never intended for commercial release. But in typical baffling QPL fashion, the final stereo mix for that show was also up-mixed to 5.1 - which just highlights further the typical laziness with QPL.

Plant sucked almost as much as he did on Live Aid
I honestly believe this is the exact moment in time where John thought "fuck this, I'm retiring"
Which is a real shame....I've just watched back the Plant performance, and have to at least give him the credit for giving it a go on the night. He's an excellent vocalist, and just a shame that nerves got the better of him. IMHO, the parts he DID get right were actually OK. I also liked how he worked parts of Kashmir into it (just a pity it wasn't all like that lol). He definitely gets into his comfort zone on "Thank You" and then nails CLTCL.
On the flipside, this performance is absolutely stunning musically - Brian is absolutely impeccable on this rendition and Roger is also at his best. Take the vocals out, and this would be awesome for CD :)

Just for fun - Led Zep @ Live Aid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmxQFpRs0gg - quite painful to listen to in some parts

If only he'd been able to shake whatever-the-fuck-it-was that was bothering him, and turned out something like this instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bbhvkjf69w

Thanks for the explanation!
I went back to Brian´s site, and you´re correct.
Here is the experts answer by Justin:
http://www.brianmay.com/experts/expjan11.html
I like the fact that Justin acknowledges the fact that the press release is ambiguous.
And for a non expert like me it would be better if he could say upfront "It´s not proper 5.1 surround mix" instead of "Both night's stereo audio have been digitally restored (cleaned up) by Kris, and then mastered and up-mixed by Tim Young."
I don´t understand their choices, or their standards anymore.

What is the point releasing this show when loads are missing from it?
i certainly will not be buying it.
They release anything but real Queen concerts from the 70s, and its a bout time they got there fingers out and released Queen "free in the park! 1976. and what about other 70s Queen shows?
i also remember jackie telling everybody over 10 years ago
that a fantastic Queen box set was getting released soon, and all the fans had to write in expressing what they wanted to see in the box set!
over 10 years later we are still waiting!!
Queen management are very very slow!!
The fans deserve better treatment.

I pre-ordered the blu-ray at £7.99
http://www.sainsburysentertainment.co.uk/en/Films-TV/Blu-ray/Queen/The-Freddie-Mercury-Tribute-Concert/product.html?product=E11248166
only £7.99! In the bargain bucket and it aint even been released yet!
It says on the overview tab:
"Eagle Vision’s new SD Blu-ray range presents upscaled standard definition original material with uncompressed stereo and DTS-HD surround sound for the best possible quality. "
Updscaled sd! What's the point of that whe TVs and DVD players have been able to do that for years?! Still not much of an improvement from SD.
Granted, the high res audio should benefit on BD.

One other benefit is it's on one blu-ray disc as opposed to three dvds. This is probably why the blu-ray is cheaper than the dvd version although they both contain the same 270 minutes content.
MackMantilla · Member since
I don't understand why they didn't include the other Extreme / Deff Leppard / Spinal Tab / U2 tracks.
Maybe they plan to re-release this BD in a more complete form within some years??
I hope, at least, the HD audio has a real improved remix
and some new interesting extras such as unseen tracks from the rehearsals..

for the same reason it wasn't on the VHS/laserdisc and previous DVD - they never got the rights to use them for official release.
and seriously I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP LISTING U2. U2 were NOT there that day, it was ONE song via satellite so it frankly doesn't even count.

That would be because TV's and DVD/BD players use a less highly efficient algorithm in order to avoid overloading the internal processor, whereas doing the upscaling during the video encoding (where there is no need to process it "on the fly" like with TV's and players, and time limits aren't affecting the encoding process) will improve much better on the upscaling work.

Upscaled SD on top of fact the picture will stretched further due to make it 16:9 after cropping. I can't see it looking too great but I'd love to be wrong ....

Pretty sure the footage was listed as 4:3, which means it'll have black pillars to the side.
